RFSL Newcomers is a network for LGBTQ asylum-seeking, undocumented, and newly arrived people. Our members come from all parts of the world and have often experienced persecution in their native countries because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression.
Newcomers was created because many asylum-seeking and newly arrived LGBTQ people feel that they are not given proper support or information about their rights when they arrive in Sweden. Today, Newcomers is a support group as well as a social meeting space. We organize regular get-togethers with activities and advice. There are Newcomers groups in many RFSL branches across Sweden, offering different levels of engagement and support.
Our goal is to strengthen the members’ identities and voices by creating meeting spaces where they can share their experiences, build relationships, and meet friends.
During our weekly activities, we discuss Swedish society and organize Swedish language classes. We also help our members with practical issues, such as finding housing. Other activities offered are study visits, dancing, swimming, as well as the possibility to get involved with RFSL’s other areas of work. Newcomers also participates in Pride and LGBTQ festivals, and can provide legal guidance for people seeking asylum.
We are a politically independent network within RFSL. We work to inform about, and strive to influence, legal and political decisions affecting LGBTQ asylum seekers. We work for equality and strengthened rights for asylum seekers and newly arrived LGBTQ people by sharing information on the current political and legal situation for asylum seekers in Sweden. We also raise awareness about the specific problems – legal and social vulnerability, oppression, and insecurity – that asylum-seeking LGBTQ people can face.
RFSL is actively engaged with asylum rights in various political contexts, and works to create further collaborations with other national and international actors that address asylum and/or LGBTQ issues.
