OOPS!— When the Wrong Things Get Between Your LegsNo one likes to think about sexually transmitted infections. How can something as nice and as much fun as sex be capable of giving such unpleasant consequences?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have become more common in men who have sex with men. Most are easy to cure if they’re caught in time; others cannot be cured but can be treated to relieve the symptoms. Sometimes the diseases have no visible symptoms. That makes it easy to miss going to the doctor, which can cause problems later in life, not to mention that you can infect others without even knowing it. For your own sake and the sake of others, it’s a good idea to get tested now and then.
Those who have a sexually transmitted infection have a greater risk of being infected or infecting others with HIV, which is much more serious. In spite of new medicines, there is currently no cure for HIV and the medical and social implications are profound. Be careful not to expose yourself or your partner to unnecessary risks. Use condoms for protection. And get tested if you’re not sure.
